Information Please Almanac-Like its print version, this almanac provides factual information on a wide range of topics. It also includes free access to the Random House Webster's College Dictionary and the Columbia Encyclopedia.

Old Farmer's Almanac-The web version of the Old Farmer's Almanac offers practical and entertaining information such as weather predictions, tide charts, planting tables and other gardening tips, sun, moon or planet rise and set data, household tips and advice, even recipes. Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, 1774 to Present - Provides biographical sketches of all individuals who served in the Congress.

Contemporary Writers in the UK - Searchable web site contains up-to-date profiles of some of the UK and Commonwealth's most important living writers - biographies, bibliographies, critical reviews, prizes and photographs. Searchable by author, genre, nationality, gender, publisher, book title, date of publication and prize name and date.

Distinguished Women of Past and Present - This site contains links to biographical information on women who made significant contributions throughout the ages.  It can be searched by field of activity or by name. 

LitLink - This site is a product of the Bedford/St. Martin's publisher and deals with literary research.  The main web page presents the different literary genres (fiction, drama, essays, poetry, critical theory), subarranged by author. For each author there is a brief biographical statement and several links to web sites for additional research.  LitLinks also includes a "research room" with information on the research process, interactive tutorials, and other research links.

The Nobel Prize Internet Archive - Focusing on past Nobel Laureates, this site can be browsed by Nobel category or searched by name.  Besides brief biographical sketches, it also provides links to relevant web sites.

Online Literary Criticism Collection - This is an excellent site for biographical information and literary criticism primarily on British and American authors.  This highly selective collection can be browsed by author, by title, or by literary period.

POTUS: Presidents of the United States - This is another highly recommended site for information on the U.S. presidency. "In this resource you will find background information, election results, cabinet members, notable events, and some points of interest on each of the presidents. - This database features over 23,000 college catalogs in complete cover to cover original page format including 2-year, 4-year, graduate, and professional schools. It also provides profiles, links to the colleges web sites, and maps for directions.

CollegeNET - This web site allows you to search institutions by various criteria including geography, major, tuition, and enrollment.  Also includes hotlinks from search results directly to homepages of the schools.

Human Rights Watch - This is a searchable web site of the Human Rights Watch, an independent, nongovernmental organization dedicated to protecting the human rights of people around the world.

- A searchable database of acronyms, abbreviations and meanings. Covers: common acronyms, computers, science, technology, government, telecommunications, and military acronyms.

AltaVista Translation Service - This site translates words, phrases and web sites from/ to English to/from French, German, Italian, Portuguese or Portuguese.  A word of caution: the translations are not always perfect, especially those of longer texts or idiomatic phrases.

The Nonverbal Dictionary of Gestures, Signs & Body Language Cues - This is a unique dictionary on nonverbal communication!  It includes thousands of entries based on the research work of anthropologists, archaeologists, biologists, linguists, psychiatrists, psychologists, semioticians, and others who have studied human communication from a scientific point of view.

- Although not comprehensive, this is a  useful list of resources for  finding fast facts similar to those included in an almanac or statistical abstract.  Besides the main Subject Guide, at the bottom of the page there is a list of comprehensive resources that may also be of value. 

Citizen Gateway -  Provides federal statistics, reports and other information on a variety of topics.

PollingReport.com - A bi-monthly "independent, nonpartisan resource on trends in American public opinion." The Web site is updated after the release of new polls, which means almost daily.

Statistical Abstracts of the United States - The primary sourcebook for statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States. Selected international data are also included.
